Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Its official name is “Day of Ashes”, so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross. Ash Wednesday is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God. This is the obligatory day of FASTING (applies to people aged 18 to 60 years old) which means limiting the amount of food eaten and ABSTINENCE (applies to people aged 14 to 60 years old) which means not eating meat on that day.
